Run gnome-alsamixer (in menu), and make sure that neither PCM nor Master are at their maximum. You may just be to hot.

Stevo, have you configured your card to use alsa at all?

Code:
alsaconf

does a pretty good job of getting things set up. Lots of times the levels are muted on boot though (i don't like that too much...).

There is a text-based mixer for alsa too: alsamixer

Oh. Heh. You're probably not using ALSA then. So gnome-alsamixer won't go at all. You just need to use the regular volume control.

You /can/ use ALSA on 10k, but it's not default (OSS is). In 19k/20k ALSA is default.

You'll need to yank the OSS stuff from /etc/modules.conf (make a backup).

You check the PCM and Master levels in the Mixer? Volume Control in the menu (or sumthin like that)
