Yes it is! But if you don't know a lot about GNU/Linux why do you want to use a distribution 100% free?

OK! $ and # aren't commands but it says when you run a command as user ($) or as root (#).
Maybe you'll have to read some documentation.

Post subject:  $,#, and general stuff

If you want to take this from public to private, I can give you some answers to your questions. However, as it was earlier stated, you would be well served if you were to have (and read or skimmed) some starter documentation. "For Beginners .." stuff usually works. If you ever had the chance to use one of the first generation Windows setups, you've seen what linux is NOT. One can do almost anything, including warehouses full of things you might have ever considered.
