Post subject:  Nvidia / Init 3 problem

I went to a guide to installing the driver for my NVIDIA graphics card to have 3d support, but in order to install it I obviously need to kill X. So I do Control-Alt-F1, but it says X is still running, so I do Telinit 3, but when I do that it tries to kill the services from Init 4 or 5 (i'm not sure which), but stalls on Starting Jexec Services, and I have to control-alt-delete to a reboot after a while of it not working. Thanks in advance for you help (A)//(E)

Just type
Quote:
init 3
which will kill x then install your driver and when the process is done
Code:
startx
and you're done :)

I'm sorry, I think I didn't clearly articulate myself. So, what I'm doing is first doing CTRL-ALT-F1. It's necessary because within the gui init and telinit aren't recognized as commands. So once I'm out of the gui, I'll type

Code:
init 3

and get the following as response

Quote:
INIT:Switching to runlevel 3
Init: Sending processes the term signal
Starting console mouse services [OK]
Starting jexec: Starting Jexec services [OK]

And that's it, for at least the next ten minutes nothing happens. I noticed that when I'm booting (into init 5 of course) it has to start jexec, and indeeds continues to do the next thing then eventually boot. Oi Vey.

Edit: Oh yeah, so I tried just doing init 3 from a root terminal and the same thing happens. I worry that it ways suchandsuchkernel on an I686, and I don't think that's the architecture I'm running. could that be causing this? Is there any way to tell what architecture I'm running?

Post subject:  well, I solved my problem

Solved it by hitting ALT+F1... duh... takes me a while, but now I have a new one. My new problem is that the only screen resolutions displayed are 800x600 and 640x480. I think it has to do with my xorg.conf settings, as they seem way simpler than in other distros I've used. They are

Quote:
# Xorg configuration created by system-config-display

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "single head configuration"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "kbd"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection

And as for non-free drivers and anarchism. There's something I fail to grasp, i really think there is, because I'm in disagreement with most of my friends on this subject. Theft from the capitalists is OK in my book. If I were to steal a bite of food from the local grocer, my anarchist friends would not condemn me for eating non-free food. Stealing from the grocer isn't a long-term solution. It's nothing to have a political ideology centered around, but it gets me through another day. It's not an exact parallel, but with NVIDIA for instance, it may not be removing intellectual property from computing, but I'm not furthering it's means either. And I have 3D support for another day. I don't know, that's just what I think.

There is stealing, then there is swallowing their poisoned pill.

/usr/bin/nvidia-settings works really damn well with proprietary driver, surely beats writing config by hand, check it out.

and play some video games, the usual anarchy.

Try video games that don't require 3d and beryl looks cool, but really isn't all that stable so it's just candy right now. Brush your teeth.

If you want eye candy that doesn't need 3d graphics, you can give the enlightenment window manager a try. It's in the repo. Still technically in development, I think, so might be buggy. I haven't looked at it in a few years. Beryl or compiz it ain't, but you can make some neat desktops with it.

Really, though, with a recent enough machine, you can make the default gnome desktop look sharp and run well.

Unfortunately, Enlightenment hasn't been working in 70k (there's a problem with the packaging).
