Indymedia has shared server/cabinet space with BLAG for the last 4 years or so. I have asked "them" to find new homes for their sites. This process is underway. If you are interested in helping out and hosting an indymedia site or two, contact them. This is probably the best place to start:

When Indymedia is finally cleared out of the servers, there will be much more bandwidth and a ridiculous amount of diskspace (a few terabytes), CPU power (5+ servers, including quad proc 3GHz), RAM (a couple boxes with 8 gigs), etc. I am deliberating about what to do with all of this.

If you have any neat brainstorms, lets kick 'em around. :)

I always like the idea around blagnx. I think people are talking about a "google desktop" nowadays... This is similar, but that desktop is gnome... In your cyber cafe browser...

Escaping from the activist and free software kick, another idea is towards /free science/. Like all these corporations are patenting your DNA, molecules, etc. They can do this because they have enormous crunch power. Perhaps we could re-allocate this to compute for the public domain. Any ideas for projects? And not seti and folding-foo, but something that can use a cluster of disks, cpu, ram, etc.

Hrm, my first thoughts tend to steer towards modelling. I came across this a while ago [http://www.climateprediction.net/index.php]. I think that one gets the source code from here:- http://boinc.berkeley.edu/source_code.php

A blag desktop's a good idea :-
* Individuals could have a virtualised machine (for example).
* Dedicated v machines for others to log into and see some set ups, installations or maintenance in action.
* A dedicated sandbox so ppl could try out blag remotely. Once they log out of the virtual machine it is destroyed and another created immediatley after.

Free shell accounts (running blag of course) available for those unable to get it installed or those who want to try blag from windows via putty.
