A friend of mine is using BLAG but wants KDE. I am going to give it a go on a box of mine just out of curiosity. How easy would it be to replace Gnome with KDE in BLAG? I don't just want to say to him to do it and then screw it all up. I have done it with other Linux distros and it was never that hard. I did used to lose menu settings etc though which was a pain. So any suggestions would be cool.

You probably don't want to replace gnome, but just add KDE to the system, assuming the drive is large enough (say 5 gigs or so).

I don't have an exact list, but it will be something like:

apt-get install kdebase arts kde2-compat kdegraphics kdelibs kdemultimedia kdenetwork kdeutils qt2 qt

Should get the bulk. In fact, you can probably leave out a few of those things as apt will get them via dependencies.

You can just add the KDE stuff you want using the synaptic package program in blag?

Ya, that's correct. The blag repository contains all blag and all redhat9. Basically the repository is the DVD's contents. Upgrading from 9000 series to 10000 series may be a bit trickier if you add lots of repository stuff though. But go for it. ;)

So you just run

Menu->System Tools->Synaptic

Do a "Update list"
Find the KDE stuff you want, hit "install"
Then "Execute"
It will download and install them. :)

I like how you marked out Redhat and put a typeset BLAG in KDE. Makes me feel like I'm part of something special here. The more I explore the possibilities, the happier I am. 8)

Everyone involved is part of something special. Linux communities are nothing without its members.
