I came accross this utility for mounting network drives though ssh. http://shfs.sourceforge.net/
But I am finding it very very flaky. Does anyone know any other utilities to do the same thing?

From my experiences, ALL network file systems are flaky. I've been trying to set up a non flaky connection of this sort, and so far I've tried both NFS and SMB and both have been flaky. Myself, I've given up on network file systems.

NBD (network block device) looks really cool, but I haven't ever used it.
