For kicks, I tried the open source java-icetea package from fedora 8 test release 3. For abut 30 megs in packages i had java working in my web browser. I guess all java won't work, but so far the ones I tried, it ran faster than sun java.

I tried installing swfdec from blag 70k, and it didn't do anything, besides let pages complain that is was an old version of flash. I deinstalled swfdec and installed gnash 0.8.1-5 from fedora 8 test release, it basically just gave me grey squares.

whoops, I deinstalled the FC8 gnash, and installed the FC7 ones from the BLAG repos. It basically works in many ways. I can see videos in youtube, but no sound yet. And Strong Bad emails won't open up to the directory. But it is something now.

second correction, I got sound to work in gnash, including youtube. Seemed to turn on when I opend the sound config panel.

While not as functional, they don't seem to hose your system like the non free source versions

I think it's worth considering adding these to the distro CD for the next version, at least as an install option like we have for the web server. The 30 megs for java would be hard. Get rid of Gnumeric? I know I opposed it's removal in the past, but for java it could be worth it.

Thanks for the input. We'll see how we can get java in there in the future. :)
