To be honest, phone hardware wise the iphone is pretty pathetic. It's two generations behind in cell data connectivity. One would be better off working on one of the other types of smart phones out there or even better http://www.openmoko.com/

"Eight Great Linux Smartphones
Open-source, free as a bird and ready to make calls, this crop of
current and forthcoming Linux-based smartphones wants to wean you off
the proprietary teat. Some are for tinkerers, others (allegedly) for
actual consumers, but if you've had enough trying to get Windows
Mobile and Palm to do what you want them to do, this is where you can
get your *nix kicks...."
Complete with pictures.

The opencellphone is coolest, of course, but I dont see it being very widespread.
I'm trying to get a FIC Neo1973 which runs OpenMoko. Right now I just have a super-basic phone as the crap software in "smartfones" annoys me too much to use. But I wouldn't mind opening a terminal to make a phone call. ;)
OpenMoko is a project running pretty much outside of FIC (the hardware producer). Like it uses openembedded.org's servers, and all their development happens there in the public. FIC is even selling full jtag gear to developers cheap.
Anyway, I look forward to finally getting my hands on a neo. The iphone doesn't interest me at all, except in that it has a multitouch display (see NYU's Jeff Han: http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/65 ).

sadly, according to http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Main_Page it could be several months or more before a usable product is available for public consumption. it's a bummer because my Treo 650 (which integrates just fine with BLAG via jpilot) needs replacement and I'd like to use the opportunity to go with an open phone.

I'm encouraged by the trailblazing of Qtopia and OpenMoko, but one big question remains: when can I pitch my Windows-hamstrung Treo 750 and get comparable functionality on a Linux-based smart phone?
