Ok, I've pinpointed the problem of the disappearing text in Blag 10k. The solution I have right now is to not install pango. Right now, I'm tearing apart Pango. Also, reverting to the older version of Pango allowed me to get my text back. So I'm investigating further, although currently if you are installing a new version of BLAG 10k, DO NOT INSTALL PANGO.

So, maybe just pull the updated version of pango out of the repository?

Well, I'm not sure it's the only cuplrit though. I have a box with pango-1.2.5-4 installed (the recent dist-upgrade one) and it has no problems.

Where did the Pango RPM come form? Fedora? Dag? Maybe try a different source or build it yourself and that would fix this horrible problem. Also, I think it may have something to do with gdk-pixbuf and pango running into each other...

Both pango & gdk-pixbuf are Fedora RPMs.
But /something/ else is going on as there are systems with both installed fine.
The current pango is from Feb 9th, 2004. The errata gdk-pixbuf is from Sep 16th. They did a release on Sep 15th for gdk-pixbuf, then the next day did another release. There may have been a conflict for that day (?). But /currently/ they should work. What versions do you have? Do you have the errata repository enabled? It's enabled by default.

yes, i have errata enabled.
i'm using gdk-pixbuf version 1:0.22.0-3.0.
i'm using the version of pango that comes on the BLAG 10000 CD. Also, something else I've noticed since the FBI incident: Synaptic is still at version 0.48! It /was/ at version 0.52 before....
Yes, I was one of those people who had them both installed just fine. What other errata was released after pango? This might help....

Ok, I installed the most recent gdk-pixbuf and I'm running it just fine. Installing the latest pango still makes the text disappear. I can't do a reinstall now, although next time I reinstall I'll experiment with the order packages are installed. Right now, not installing the latest Pango solves everything.

Instructions:
First, install all the latest updates EXCEPT PANGO.
Next, log in as root. DO NOT USE SU FROM A REGUALAR ACCOUNT, THIS WILL NOT WORK. You must log out and relogin as root if you're using X.
Then, cd into the directory with this fix and type:
./pangofix.sh
The fix will install the latest pango and fix it as well.

Hmm. It looks like at some point you got a pango with a higher epoch so it wouldn't upgrade.... I don't think anyone downloading 9k/10k today will see this issue...

Really.... Hmm, perhaps time for a real 10001. Unfortunately Dag never did the modules I thought would appear forever ago and I got moving on a different track... I really like 10k though. :)

Heh yeah. Roll in some updates, my pango fix although if you can't get the kernel modules, oh well, just use the kernel that BLAG 10000 used. I'm pretty sure we're all fans of BLAG 10k. The one problem I'm starting to see is that fewer and fewer FC1 RPM's are being rolled out by major repo's and alot of websites...especially non-free software like Skype etc.
Looks like I need to learn to roll PRM's. :)
Anyways, best of luck with BLAG 10001 if you think its time for it.
