RMS is a famous hacker from MIT who started GNU and the Free Software Foundation in 1983 in order to create a computer system the completely respected the freedoms of users.

Revolution OS is a movie about all this:

you can also find a lot of his writings at:

And check out the BLAG home page. A large portion of 'old timers' are either religiously or politically involved in the concept of "Free Software". It is just a plus for some that they don't need to pay. The issues are much bigger than that. A programmer can STILL make money configuring systems and system software.

I think that any version of linux that you find, and can afford, will be GNU linux - the s/w code libraries, compilers, assemblers, making file makefiles, are all GNU. Even IBM, DEC, HP, DELL , SUN - all use GNU linux.

You shouldn't play unless you know of rms & his kids - FSF, GNU, etc.
Read up - hop on board. This has global consequences.

BTW, the reason that I posted about rms is that the DNS trace pgm.to which you referred is not "free software" as defined by rms, et al.
