problem is - as most other hardware those modems come with a windblowz only program, which configures access to the 3g network, utilizing provider's settings.
is there any linux equivalent?

I found some generic references that this device works in linux here, but I see no software to initiate the connection.

any ideas?

I use NetworkManager to initiate 3G connections, it all works for me on all my laptops, even my X60 with built in 3G card on the Vodafone network.
