How about x-terminal-session? It's a package I made a while back (link) that adds an option for "Terminal" to your GDM (or KDM) menu. The option launches the default terminal (x-terminal-emulator) and the default window manager (x-window-manager) to make it look pretty.
In Mint's case, this is gnome-terminal and metacity. This also causes gnome-settings-daemon to load the desktop background, which was unintentional but is something I like.
