My laptop has an onboard wifi adapter, intel pro/wireless 2915abg. support has been discontinued.
I have been reading the installation guide downloaded from the intel download site through sourceforge but there is a caveat:
The installation guide makes referencing to enabling some #define attributes in this file:
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/include/linux/autoconf.h
but i cannot find the file in blag 140k. the file configures wireless properties.
can anyone help me out please? I have to have networking up on my system otherwise am in despair.
tnx

First blag is a 100% free distro so you won't find any non-free firmware on its repo.
Second: blag runs with a kernel linux-libre so its kernel won't load a non-free firmware.
So you'll have to find the firmware on fedora repos (rpmfusion non-free) and install a kernel that isn't free.
Blaggers aren't here to encourage such practices!

blag is supposed to drive every hardware, whatever the manc. especially one coming from intel.
so, how do you advice i drive or enable this wifi adapter using blag. i appreciate the principles of blag. i do dig such principles myself, especially where linux has so many forks.
tnx

No! Blag is a 100% free distro; so it doesn't run out-of-the box with hardware that needs non-free firmware.

I refuse to believe that Blag or any linux distro that is gnu/linux should not run an intel wifi adapter.
it's unbelievable.

Don't believe it! And try to use a non 100% free distro.

i wonder why u are so harsh on me?
wonder what your authority is on blag?
i would be pleased. i know there is a way. if you can't someone can. the impossible is just one integer away from the limits of the possible.
help me understand the limitations of gnu/linux, please, then i will understand what options i have. thanks. nice day

I gave you the answer. Use a non-free kernel and install the non-free firmware from rpmfusion non-free repo.

A 100% free distro doesn't have non-free firmware in its repo. I can't tell you any more about that.
maybe reading this:http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-system-distribution-guidelines.en.html will give you some answers.

read the guidelines. there were no references to modules in the kernel.
I ran modprobe and lsmod some days ago on my system.
I also ran this command minutes after logging off this forum:
dmesg | grep ipw2200 and received this output:

[ 26.546871] ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.2.2kmprq
[ 26.546875] ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation
[ 26.547015] ipw2200 0000:02:04.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 21 (level, low) -> IRQ 21
[ 26.547096] ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection
[ 26.588294] ipw2200: /*(DEBLOBBED)*/ reject_firmware failed: Reason -22
[ 26.588300] ipw2200: Unable to load firmware: -22
[ 26.588304] ipw2200: failed to register network device
[ 26.588583] ipw2200 0000:02:04.0: PCI INT A disabled
[ 26.588618] ipw2200: probe of 0000:02:04.0 failed with error -5

can it help in anyway. I am still reading up on bash reference but in weeks will be up with linux networking proper.
although there was no reference to firmware in the guidelines or to modules in the kernel, I can see there is something like "deblobbed" in the report above.
can you put me through on this, along with the lines accompanying it.
I'll then make decisions from then.
tnx for the link. cheerio.

Yes, I can! It won't work with a linux-libre as I said before because the kernel is deblobed and won't load non-free firmware. But it seems you don't want to understand what I say.

understand perfectly, especially with the link provided.
either use another modem with free drivers or use a non-free distro.
tnx
please, can you give me a link to a forum or community where one can ask questions about free software; been at fsf site; can't find any forum and don't have the money for membership yet.
please do. tnx once again

There is the social network: http://identi.ca/ and some mailing lists and IRC channels.
But you know I've a VAIO that has intel pro wireless wifi card; so I installed a non-free kernel and the non-free firmware and like that I can use the wifi if I need it and I use it 100% free when I connect with ethernet cable with a kernel linux-libre. Just installed two kernels: the kernel linux-libre and the fedora one.

PS: you may too join us on blag IRC channel: irc.indymedia.org channel #blag.

yeah, i intend doing the same. I'll install fedora 17 on another partition soonest but i think i prefer blag for experimental purposes. i like simplicity and that is what blag gives.

No need to install fedora with dual boot, just install a fedora kernel and the intel pro wireless firmware. If you need the wifi at boot you may chose the non-libre kernel; if not you may boot on linux-libre kernel.

that's interesting. thanks for the insight. that means both kernels share the same environment and same programs? never thought that was possible. well, that's for noobs.
will search for a link on net for it.
