Enjoy!

Some known bugs:

some menu items don't have blag icons
some apps are still from 30k and therefore don't work.
some apps (noteably xmms & tor) haven't been rolled for 40k yet and had obscure 30k deps so were removed.

Actually, I think all the 30k apps still work fine.

But it certainly still has a couple bugs (maybe three). If you see 'em, please 'zilla them:

What is the best way to install this being a blag user.

Can this be dont with a apt-get dist-upgrade?

Can this be done through a CD install choosing the upgrade option in Anaconda?

Should this be done with a complete HD wipe?

Basically, I am asking what is the BEST way to do this install, and then with this installed, can it updated through apt-get to the final finished release when it is put out.

Thanks

First: make sure you have BACKUPS

You can try an upgrade install. Just put the cd in there and go through anaconda and select "upgrade" instead of install.

When that's done, you can run this to sync up any packages you've installed that weren't on the CD:

Code:
apt-get update
apt-get -f install
apt-get dist-upgrade

Let us know how it goes. Remember this is ALPHA! :)

ok, great. when the torrent d/l is done, I will give it a shot.

I am one of those people who just has to have the latest/greatest/newest/etc, so to me, alpha means fun!

I run blag on my laptop, so there is nothing absolutely vital there, it is just my fun and travel computer.

I will post updates on progress and problems as/if they arise.

All went well without a hitch, and as yet, as far as can see, all seems to be working with the exception of my panel icon for thunderbird email. There is no icon at all in the applications menu, but the program is there to run.

All additions i.e. flash/java/et. al. appear to still be working with the new versions.

I have only scratched the surface, but there are no major glitches as of yet.

Are my eyes deceiving me, or do the desktop icons appear wider? For some reason, the trash can, especially seem to have changed size, and the fonts do not appear to be as crisp as they were under FC3?

Cool. Glad you got it all going fine.

I'm not sure what you're seeing with the icons. I haven't done a test upgrade yet... ;)

If you don't figure it out, bugzilla it, if you grok that.

It appears that the icon is present in the pixmaps directory, yet they will not display on the top panel. Firefox will, and made it through the upgrade process. The icon for thunderbird made it through the upgrade as well, but the linking changed. I can change the icon now, after changing the program linking to any of the icons in the pixmap directory except the one for thunderbird itself. Is there something in/associated with the .png file itself? that forces it not to be displayed on the top panel?

Just a tip...

I did an upgrade to from blag 30K1 to the alpha, and all went well. In my normal attempts to tweak with things, I eventually screwed things up beyond repair, and did what has become nearly a weekly ritual or freshly installing my distro. Now, I have a non-upgrade, fresh install of the pre 40K alpha, and it runs notably faster than the upgrade version did. I have no real ideas why, but just to let people know that I am having a faster experience this way than doing the install as an upgrade. Hope this is helpful to some.

Well, as always, fresh installs are always better than upgrades.

Yes, it is gconf fooness and we're completely aware of it, i'm pretty I already filed a bug on it too. It'll be fixed eventually. Gconf is weird, it's sorta like the windows registry, that's why it's so buggy. As jebba put it, it's got to be the single worst aspect of GNOME.

Thanks for testing,
