I have just bought a Canon a80 camera...I have never used a digital camera before
so I did the unusual and rtfm'd...It tells me (for windows) I MUST load the software
before I plug the usb lead into the camera.....I do not use windows so what do I do in Linux ??....Also does anyone know if a Belkin card reader will function under Linux...

You can just plug the camera into blag. gthumb should automajickally launch.
The belkin card reader should work--or at least i've used a couple that have worked for me.
Neither of the above have required extra drivers.
If you can, you may want to set your camera in USB PTP mode.
