hi i am a little stuck playing video files in mplayer. they all worked in blag10000. i know from the forum threads it is a codec issue. so how do i fix it? i read the manual but it seems there is conflicting information where to put the codecs. some say /usr/lib/codecss and some say /usr/local/lib/codecs. do i dump them in there or create a foldler called win32? i downloaded the essential pack of codecs and put them in both places. it wont play .rm files though or .wmv. i think this will be a big problem as 2 friends did the same. maybe we can post instructions? thank you for your hard work. blag is awesome. thank you so much.

In the doubt the best is to create a /usr/lib/win32 folder and to create a link /usr/lib/codecs.
rm files needs realplayer codecs installed and wmv files can need a prelink adjustement (for this see http://blaglinux.blogspot.com)

I don't know which rpm your using but this one seem to work well ,and the only one I use with 10k & 30k..You can google it if you want it. ( w32codec-1.0_20041107-11.at.i386) hope this helps out. :)

atrpms.net has one that i believe works fine with the mplayer that comes with blag with no configuration/symlinks needed.

I thought the idea was to /not/ have those things, so that wouldn't make much sense.

I thought so too but wanted to doulble check. Either ways people will know where to get the RPM from anyways from the link provided. So the problem is solved.
What would be an awesome solution is something that can convert files from .rm etc into a more open format. Then we needn't bother with codecs like this. Just let people run the convert tool and voila.

I think mplayer/mencoder can convert from .rm, but i haven't tried it.
How about wiki-ing about the codecs & how to install?

Aye I planned to wiki it.I just was checking if we should host the rpms or not. I will go write it up now.
EDIT: it's done now http://wiki.blagblagblag.org/W32codec

OK. Thanks. Perhaps an explanation saying why we don't include them would be a nice addition.
I also edited it slightly for readability. If you put a space at the beginning of the line, it offsets it like code. I wish wikis just used HTML so you didn't have to learn all their different conventions...

Ok I will add an explanation too and a link to the thread here perhaps?
I agree with the wiki formatting. Even after rtfm it can seem weird. I just wish it was HTML.
