Hi,

Just a little question : is it possible to create a non-free repository on BLAG ftp to upload external apps that were tested in BLAG like Xnview, MainActor, Skype...

A special More Apps repo would also be welcome, but I don't know the free disk capacity on the Indymedia server.
(thinking to Qemu, Wine....W32codec)

I think the general idea is to keep even the repositories 100% Open Source. We could have had a subdomain host them but even so I think the general consensus is to keep everything BLAG related 100% Open Source.

FYI wine is in the repositories anyway as it is Open Source. There is a wiki page regarding the w32codecs with a link on where to get them.

http://wiki.blagblagblag.org/W32codec

QEMU has an open source and proprietary interests. So for that reason the proprietary application cannot be in BLAG.

could somebody please update the info pertainig to these w32codecs on the wiki. all links to everything here are dead.

whether anyone feels that they are not needed or should not be included, is crazy. no sense even being on the net, or having a computer, if you can't play the most popular file format there is!!

What format is it that you are trying to play? Mplayer can play most formats without any binary codecs.

I've been very impressed with MPlayer in 70K. I have troubles finding stuff that it can't handle, usually it's old stuff I have archived that I really should just get off my butt and convert to ogg.

oh yeah!
maybe should've checked that out first, but so used to having to find all those "essential" non free things right off the bat, that i never tried any audio/video out at all, after initial blag install.

That's with no binary codecs at all.

whether anyone feels that they [w32codecs] are not needed or should not be included, is crazy.

How does VLC compare? If ever there was an official FSF media player, it would be VLC (the FSF uses it for their use OGG campaign - sounds a bit like overkill, but whatever). Can it play all those formats without binary codecs?

There already seems to be distros like SuSE, Mandriva, Linspire that do the non free things already. And distros like BLAG does the free thing. What fustrates me are the ones that straddle the issue.

I don't have a full list for VLC but it "seems" to be able to play a ton of formats to me. I like VLC, but i seem to just use mplayer all the time...
