I have 2 PC's - PC1 running BLAG and the other PC2 with Doze'98. Both are
connected to a Linksys router (which connects to a cable modem).

Can I access files on PC2 from PC1?

if you set up the 1st PC as a samba server (and make sure nmb is installed too). Then use network neighbourhood in the other PC to see the 1st PC.

either use RPM or apt-get to install samba. Take a look at the file /etc/samba/samba.conf

There sill be a sample setting for a publicly accessible folder . here is an example:

# Global parameters
workgroup = MSHOME
security = USER
null passwords = Yes
ldap ssl = no
encrypt passwords = yes
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd

comment = Home Directories
browseable = no
read only = no
create mode = 0750

comment = Public Stuff
path = /mnt/2winData
public = yes
writable = yes
printable = no

In this case you would make a directory in /mnt called 2winData

Also if i remember correctly you then make a linux user with same username and password as the windows one:

adduser newuser

passwd newuser

smbaddusr newuser:newuser

Then make sure samba and nmb are started by

/etc/init.d/rc.d/smb start

then see if it works.

also do a search on this forum for samba. there are a few posts describing howtos

There are lots of ways to share files between the two PCs. Samba is a pretty good way, but sometimes gets a bit complicated.

Another way to access the linux box via the windows box is via ssh/sftp. To start sshd on your linux box (if it's not running already) run:
/sbin/service sshd start

Then with windows get an sftp client and log into the linux box with your username/password.

There are ways to mount your windoz shared drives under linux too. I don't use 'doze at all, so I'm not sure what the exact command is, but check out smbclient and smbmount.

You could also set up sharing via the regular ftp server or the web server as well. :)

I personally find SCP and FTP to be the easiest.
