Stick with 30k for now if it's your main box. Unless, of course, you are someone who likes to experiment around and test things. But if you just want a stable box, stay 30k.

When 40k comes out, we'll suggest folks upgrade to it. I'm not sure at this point if it will use less resources or not, but it should be faster (especially booting).

thanks anyways, and as of yet, still no problems, all working fine.
apteryx. |
When you say "no problems" does your gnome default application for .rpm files come up as archive manager?
I have this problem and was just wondering if it's due to something that i've done wrong.
I've spent hours looking for the answer, but so far no joy.
Also I seem to have some gnome menu icons missing but i think that's already a known issue.

Every reboot trashes my changes I've made in the volume control, wondering if this is an isolated issue.

I was also wondering if you guys had an estimated date of arrival for Blag 4k? Or Beta Release?
Come to think of it i also have a strange occurance where every once and a while, which is often but not frequent, i loose the Show Desktop, Workspace Switcher and Window Lists apps on startup. I cannot remember the exact error, but it options if i want to reload them, or not, when i do they come back! :) Could be local though :)

I've just had this error for the first time after about probably 30 startups.
I had just before booted off a slax kill bill live cd - don't know if this had anything to do with it though.

Whenever the dev's get around to it. I know plenty of people who do work on BLAG including myself are quite busy right now, so it'll probably be a while.
Thanks,

Waiting for my 30k.39999 torrent to finish.
Just thought I might throw this out there.
I've noticed that sometimes a fresh install of 30k will have certian files set with 600 (or maybe it was 000 cant remember), permissions instead of 644, particularly certian icons. This might explain some of the menu icons being missing, since a regular user (or root with 000) can't read them. Simple enough to reset the permissions manually. I don't know enough about how anaconda works to say why the permissions get set like that. But if it happens to icons it could happen to more critical files. Id be curious to know if this happened to any body else. Post here and let us know.

When is 4k due? Is there a release schedule somewhere?

If you list which files in particular you know have this problem, i'll take a look.

Hi Jebba,
I tried the live CD and it looks pretty lean and mean, but I did notice an
increase in speed. This did convince me to "upgrade" to my exisiting
30K to 40K via synaptic. I know 40K is not ready for prime time yet
but I am willing to take a chance. After all I had been using BLAG 30K
even before it was released. I hope 40K to be of the same high quality.
I don't want to ruin a DVD to burn the ~40K BLAG iso. It won't fit on the
regular CD. I can either do it via synaptic or via qemu (use the iso
image to boot from the psuedo CD-ROM device).
Which one would you suggest?
Thanks.

40k is still in alpha, but you've been around long enough, you should know what the alphas are like. :)

I really don't recommend a dist-upgrade of 30k->40k, unless you want to realllllly test things out. I don't know how that will go.
There is a 40k CD image that fits on one CD, so use that one. Boot up, run the installer, selecting "upgrade" when prompted.
After the CD upgrade is done, boot up and run:
| Code: | apt-get update
apt-get -f install
apt-get dist-upgrade |
That should bring you up to snuff.
