UPDATE: It appears that removing Totem has fixed the problem with DVD's so far. Or at least Totem does not open up, nor do I get a message something to the effect that Totem can't be found.

Removing totem should remove it from the menu too. It may be cached for a bit.
There is likely a gconftool-2 key that says "run this program when DVDs are inserted". ... Perhaps in blag-firstboot I'll set that to xine.

jebba - you might wanna do the same for audio cds, i.e. have gnome-cd rather than totem as the default app
