In the last build of firefox I disabled pango.
firefox-1.5.0.4-3blag.fc5.i386.rpm
This should speed up firefox quite a bit, but at the cost of mucking up right-to-left languages.
If the language you are using isn't rendering correctly, edit /usr/bin/firefox in a text editor and comment out these lines with a # before them:
