How do I make shortcuts to programs that are in my "start" menu to my desktop? For example, I would like a icon for XMMS (aka Audio Player) on my desktop. Thanks for any help you can give me on this matter.

simply drag the items out of your star menu and drop them onto your desktop.

you can also drag items to yor edge panel if you want to. I prefer using the edge panel. Some interesting features that you can add, like the weather, email notications and loads more stuff.
[edited to say: I forgot the sticky notes, very handy!]
