only thing i did not like about 50k1 was that there were 2 cd burning apps, only 1 worked, and that's gnomebaker.

That's why there's two.. One works some places the other works in others... If there's two of something it's because it's ain't quite there yet.
There are endless discussions on LKML about cdrecord. There is likely to be a (real/maintained) fork of it in the future.
