A lot of people use keyboards with special buttons, for stuff like internet links, volume control, cd-playing and etcetera. I am one of those people. One thing I missed when I fully switched over to linux was the ease of just pushing a button to launch firefox or gaim, or quickly muting the volume to answer to phone or something.
That's when I came across xhkeys ( http://wmalms.tripod.com/#XHKEYS ). This program works really well and now I've configured all my buttons to work for me instead of taunt me by not being able to use them. I did this over a month ago and I've been really happy with it, everything works really well.
As you can see if you visit the page, it's pretty small in filesize. There's a source tarball and RPM for the latest release, and I think it'd be a great addition to the distro becuase of the functionality it gives back to ex-windows users like myself.

You can do keybindings in gnome, so an additional program isn't needed. I blogged about this awhile back.

It discusses another application as well. If it isn't clear, lemme know. gconf-editor is the key program for setting this up...
