Going with only one kernel (i586 or i686) in 60k is being considered at the moment.
i586 generally covers Pentium 1; it's not sane to install 60k on a Pentium 1. However, some clones made it to higher clock speeds and I think the AMD K6-III, which made it to 450mhz, is an i586 processor.
The Pentium Pro/2 and beyond are all i686 processors, as well as all AMD processors made after the K6-III.
Also note that each kernel is approximately 15MB. That extra space can go to more applications on the CD.
Are there any objections to removing the i586 kernel? (Caraibes, I'm looking at you! A number of VIA processors may also not be i686 compatible...)

If you are wondering whether your system is running a i686 or i586 kernel run this command:
| Code: | | rpm -q --queryformat "%{ARCH}\n" kernel |
If it says i586, your box wouldn't be supported in 60k under this proposal.
What we're trying to do here is figure out whether there really are BLAG users using i586 kernels or not... We're estimating it's 100-1 for users on i686 vs i586.
Going i686 would save us 22 megs on the CD. I think we've kind of made a decision, but are open to mass objections. ;)

Jeff, I don't believe there are too many people out there who actually have a Pentium I and are interested in turning it into any type of functional desktop machine. Seriously.
I think you're making a good decision, indeed. Saving space on the CD for stuff like Emacs. Just kidding ;-)

even my relatively "old school" PC (600 MHz) is a i686. I'd vote to give the i586 kernel a dignified send-off.

I also agree for the space to get used for other stuff on CD, I'm running 59K on a T23 which says i586, i686 but if it is a problem running 60K on it then I'll just swithch to 50K3 or some other blag.

Ah, the T23 is definitely i686. That's another issue. In FC6 oftentimes the wrong kernel gets selected by the installer. This is a known issue and I believe I know what the fix is.

I think I've always gotten i586 kernels with blag installs on my main box, an aging but very i686 AMD Thunderbird 750. And I've been blagging since 9002.
Trimming it from the cd is fine by me.

I am running Blag 5 on my old home-built clunker-
400 MHz AMD K6-III
512 MB of SD100 ram
It is a little slow but not unbearable.
The trick is to choose "customize now" during the install and uncheck anything I won't use.
This is no longer my main machine tho, I have a new System76 that makes Blag run like a rocket ship!! So I won't be _too_ upset if you drop 586 support.

Just because a box comes pre-loaded with Ubuntu does not mean it is not 100% supportive of free software.
However, the chances do dwindle, if that's what "Get out the torches and pitchforks!", means.
