hi
is there a quick and easy way to get mp3 support on blag 70k? I have thousands of mp3s, which I used to play with playlists on xmms.....but now, having put 70k on a new machine, my mp3s won't play.
i also can't edit mp3s on the installed version of audacity - I tried a new version of audacity, but it said it wasn't compiled with mp3 support. using lame, I'm able to save from audacity as mp3, but I still can't open or listen to mp3s (except on mplayer, which has no playlists, levels, or controls)

Hmm, mp3s should play fine in general. There were some audacity builds without mp3 support though. All the mp3 stuff is GPL that's in BLAG, so it's not slaveware. :)

Just did so successfully under 70K. It should be noted that I've got the following RPMs installed, although I don't know how many of them are essential for MP3 playback:

quick answer is to grab audacity-nonfree or somesuch from livna. Though the blag version has done mp3 in the past, i'm not certain why the version you have isn't. Perhaps it got updated over and the update didnt have mp3.

out of interest, when distros like ubuntu don't ship with mp3 support (which i presume is for gpl reasons), how does blag get around it? why don't ubuntu go down the same route as blag? is it because, theoretically, ubuntu can be sold?
i read the wiki but it's still clear as mud.

The code for mp3 playback and encoding is GPL but I believe distributing such code is restricted in some countries (ie the states) because it is a patented format.

Ubuntu doesn't ship mp3 not for a GPL reason, but so that it won't get hit up for money by the vultures owning various patents related to it.

I apologize to any vultures for comparing them to software patent owners.
Anyways, any distro with mp3 has either paid for a license or figured they aren't worth suing for money cause they aren't popular and don't have any money.

cheers for the explanation. so linux mint, for example, are cutting it pretty close to the bone by shipping mp3 (and more), and being so widely distributed - 3rd on distrowatch last time i looked.
if only more mp3 players / ipods supported ogg...

Linux Mint also distributes a version without mp3 for countries where that would be needed. Again, how much money does Linux Mint have?
With Rock Box, most players can support ogg.

Or just convert to mp3 when transferring over to the player.

Odd. Mp3's (leeched from my friends) play fine on my 70000 system. I use Audacious and Listen, and both play them with no issue.
