For an unknown reason, my Canon IXUS-400 digital camera is no longer recognized by blag 60001 via any USB port of my laptop. Any tip & hint ? this cam was always found by the system, allowing me to download the pictures onto my hard disk with a simple HMI. The problem suddenly appeared this week-end.
many thanks in anticipation.

Well, I know nothing about the particulars of that camera, but you could check `dmesg`, and install usbutils to run `lsusb` to see what is going on.

Code:
apt-get update
apt-get install usbutils
lsusb
dmesg
man lsusb

Some cameras can set their USB ports to different modes, so check that. For instance, it can be set to be a usb harddrive, which is easiest (e.g. drag and drop with nautilus), or in picture-to-picture mode. Of course every vendor gives these modes different names so you'll have to translate that into canonesque.

Hello Jeff,

thanks for the dmesg tip. I quite often use this command to check that my wifi cnx is down due to the famous bug "input FIFO overrun, resetting", but I failed to to use it for the digital camera issue
1) dmesg outputs :
usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 7
usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

(these 2 messages are available right after I connect my digital camera AND if I switched it ON along with the "display/show" picture configuration of the cam). Which is already a quite good news (just for information, dmesg does not output anything if I just connect the USB cable, or if I don"t switch the cam ON with the "display/show" config).

2) checked with Synaptics that usbutils was already installed (0.71-2.1). "usbutils is already the newest version" is the result of "apt-get install usbutils".

3) lsusb stuff :
[root@lns-bzn-43-82-249-132-119 ~]# lsusb

4) running dmesg again : no new messages available.

Code:
bInterfaceProtocol 1 Picture Transfer Protocol (PIMA 15470)

Ok, so in that mess it shows that your camera is using the picture transfer protocol, and will *not* appear as a hard drive on your desktop in that configuration. Could you try changing the mode on your camera and see if it does what you want (or check if it's even available, i guess).

What application were you using to download the photos with anyway? (gphoto2 a likely guesss)

Also, FYI, your camera is running in USB 1 mode (i dont think that's related to the problem, but thought you might like to know).

I never pay attention to the pop-up window which always came when I used to connect my camera (I mean, before the problem occured). To download the pictures from the cam, I did not have to do anything more than :
* connecting the USB cable to both my laptop and the Canon cam.
* powering On the cam (having selected the "read picture" mechanical selector (this only other position available is "take a picture/movie".
The cam was automatically found and the most-likely gphoto2 HMI went up, allowing me to ask for transfering the photos onto my hard disk. This cam can not be handled as a USB_storage-mass device. So that's why I guess the picture transfer protocol is used.
What could prevent this protocol not working ?? Well, don't you think the problem is the same as the gpodder one (see my previous pending post) : gphoto2 requires gtk to work properly, and it does not work properly, although I remove/re-installed the package.

The application should be gphoto2 (as digikam has a KDE like HMI). Both digikam and gphoto2 handle Canon IXUS 400 digital camera.

I don't know what this HMI is that you are talking about.

What happens if you run gphoto2 from the menu or command line? Does the program run at all? You could just launch the program then do import from there.

gphoto2 is not available from the standard gnome menu. I will launch "gphoto2 &" from an xterm when my cam will be available (I've lended it to one of my colleague). thanks for your support

I've decided to erase my BLAG60001 partition. Then I've re-installed Blag 60001 from my installation CD-ROM. Obviously, the canon IXUS 400 digital cam problem is fixed.
