Speeds fluctuate a lot: I used to get upwards of 100K/sec (my max bandwidth), but nowadays it's less than 5K/sec and usually about 1K/sec.

So, the ping times aren't overly alarming. A larger contributing problem is North America's need for a new (better) transatlantic uplink, which affects Cogent plenty. Level3 has trouble handling the additional traffic as well, but as you can see - most overseas is routed by CogentCo. Even if it were handled by Level3, it's unlikely we'd see any increase in speed or decrease in latency.
The only LUGger who posted their average download speeds was you. We can't really pull a whole lot of information from user john maclean unless he gives us his average download speeds from servers in the US. If he averages 53Kbps from other US servers, well, that's more a provider issue for him. It would also be helpful for us to know the connection speeds the users are on.
To get some information on actual download/upload speeds, rather then latency, we suggest you try speedtest.net, there are servers in Denver (and the UK) which you can test against. You and the LUGgers can also test speeds from FRII by downloading 10meg.doc from our FTP server - ftp ftp.frii.com, login user = anonymous pass = their email address, cd /pub/support/outgoing, get '10meg.doc' - that will give an accurate representation of download speeds from FRII. |

Another followup from the ISP.
