....won't install?
synaptic lists broken files and lost keys and stuff.

I'm 'new' to linux and just today migrated from Puppy 4 after a week of trying to get my machine to do in Linux what it did without a whimper in XP. without success.

BLAG looks like a great option because it's local, has great politics, and looks great, so i want to stick with it if i can.

I also have a problem ejecting disks - the drive shuts again before i have a chance to grab the darned disk!

Yep, i'm a complete noob. Any help or pointers to solutions?

Cheers folks!

I've noticed this same behavior, which I swear is new to BLAG 90K. It's been great training for my reflexes though!

Synaptic is foo, sorry. Broken upstream too. Try:

Code:
yum install inkscape

I can't speak to the specifics of Inkscape, but synaptic uses "apt", which has proved problematic in BLAG 90K. We've been recommending "yum" instead. Here's what worked for me:

Code:
[root@placencia]# yum install inkscape
blag                                                     | 2.4 kB     00:00

That's great. It worked a treat, many thanks!

So would it be true to say that Synaptic is a good way of CHOOSING apps, then DL/Install them with yum? ~ Does yum always source dependencies?

fedora 9 just has administration > add/remove software which pretty much is a gui to yum, my blag 91 has no gui so i can't tell if its there as well or not (it should be i guess).
one of the reasons why add/remove sucks is because you can not select multiple packages for installation in one go.
positive side - it is significantly faster then synaptic.

btw i am truly amazed to read your posts about the drive close problem - i have exactly the same problem :) so it must be fc 9 upstream and not blag specific.

Is there a work around for this? It's way too fast closing - i just scratched a DVD! ;(
Interestingly it doesn't happen with blanks, so i guess the app/whatever hasn't finished with the disk -or doesn't think it has. The only thing i can think of to save my media is to reboot and go into bios, then swap/remove disk while the system is halted ;D None too practical is it? LOL!

Is there likely to be a patch for either problem? (I don't want much do i? I already have a free OS with some great features LOL!)

Cheers again!

it works this way here:
- when no cd/dvd is in the drive = opening works fine
- when blank is inserted and not written to = opening works fine

- upon inserting cd/dvd and it being mounted - 1st button press to open the tray = it closes automatically // 2nd time pressing the button is ok and the tray remains open. yes i realize this sounds stupid but i always have to press eject button twice to make sure the tray is not going to close.

permanent fix - disable haldaemon service, but this will also disable all gnome automounting on the desktop, so you will have to err :) mount by hand and that requires su/sudo rights.

out of curiosity - which drive do you have?

one of the reasons why add/remove sucks is because you can not select multiple packages for installation in one go.
positive side - it is significantly faster then synaptic.

btw i am truly amazed to read your posts about the drive close problem - i have exactly the same problem :) so it must be fc 9 upstream and not blag specific.

I've installed yumex as a yum-centric GUI alternative to synaptic, but I don't like it as much. Besides, I'm an old crustacean who's become accustomed to the command line. ;^)

it works this way here:
- when no cd/dvd is in the drive = opening works fine
- when blank is inserted and not written to = opening works fine

- upon inserting cd/dvd and it being mounted - 1st button press to open the tray = it closes automatically // 2nd time pressing the button is ok and the tray remains open. yes i realize this sounds stupid but i always have to press eject button twice to make sure the tray is not going to close.

permanent fix - disable haldaemon service, but this will also disable all gnome automounting on the desktop, so you will have to err :) mount by hand and that requires su/sudo rights.

out of curiosity - which drive do you have?

yes! hitting eject again as drawer is closing does the job for me too.
Thank you so much! ;)

It's just an unbranded bog standard 2-3 year old DVD rom drive, shows up as 'unknown', the other is a more recent LG 'super multi' RW DVD with lightscribe & securdisk features.
If there's a way to harvest technical specs from them, let me know and i'll supply the info, but as i mentioned - i'm a genuine 'noob' :D

Thanks again for the help,
