Fedora 9 has no problem with this 10 year old sound card, yet Blag90001 coughs up this interesting tidbit and so I have NO sound. Explanation? Work-around? Solution?

This looks like the key line:
| Quote: | | sound/pci/ymfpci/ymfpci_main.c:2392: firmware request failed: |
I didnt confirm on the list, but it looks like that card may require non-free software to be loaded to run.

Seems that some sort of firmware is needed. I compiled alsa-firmware and installed it and sound is back. Strange that gNewsense would support the card and blag would not.

SND_YMFPCI - Yamaha YMF724/740/744/754
Yes, it was removed. This file is nearly all hex: ymfpci_image.h
It probably shouldn't be in gnewsense either. Maybe you had the firmware installed and gnewsense loaded it from that? Anyway, you may want to ask them about that as I doubt they would want it in there.
