Kill switches are getting more common in slaveware. With the iphone, not only does Apple get to approve what software is allowed on your phone, they can remotely turn off apps they no longer like. From what I can tell, the iphone is the greatest achievement of slaveware that we've seen yet.

I'm waiting for the Adobe Flash killswitch implemented at the behest of MPAA/RIAA (not yet, but will be in the future no doubt).

erhmm for the record - this applies only to esx and has nothing to do with workstation/server line of products.

yep "just" :) enterprise - not in the sense of licensing but in the sense that it requires server hardware, so there is little sense for home/single users in using it - that is what workstation is for.
esx btw is also free to legally use given that you have proper hardware raid
