I'm living in Guadeloupe and French speaking, so I put the news from BBC News.

Violent strikes on French island
Strikes and protests have hit the islands' tourism industry

Police on France's Caribbean island of Guadeloupe have arrested dozens of people as protests against the rising cost of living turned violent.

Officials said police responded after coming under a barrage of stones from the protesters in Point-a-Pitre.

The protest's organisers said police used tear gas to disperse crowds and several people were injured.

On the neighbouring French island of Martinique, thousands of people held a rally, demanding higher wages.

The protests started almost a month ago, bringing life on the islands to a standstill.

Thousands of tourists - an important source of revenue - have reportedly cancelled their holidays in Guadeloupe and Martinique.

The islands have a high cost of living and use the euro.

Correspondents say many residents feel their salaries are not keeping up with rising prices.

But there are a lot of articles on the websites of French newspapers, of course.
And from the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/feb/17/guadeloupe-martinique-protest-france-strike

And today we learn there is a man shot dead during the night. He was a comrade from my Union. He came back from a meeting and was shot by young people on "barricades".
There are two things: during the day Unions blocked the roads and streets and during the night young people fired shops and pillaged them. It seems that the guy was shot dead by young robbers when going home after an unions meeting.
Sorry, I'm French speaking.

there are of course more radical/rational perspectives: for example, the Confédération Nationale du Travail (CNT) (en) | (fr).
