A fellow benchmarked a ton of distributions for speed of install, memory use, menu use, etc. Distros benchmarked:

ArKH2o
ASP
Aurox 9.4
BLAG
Connectiva
Debian 3.2
Fedora Core 2
Knoppix 3.4
LBA
Linspire
Lorma 5
Mandrake 10
Mepis
Munjoy
Onebase 1.4
Overclockix
PCLinux 2k4
Peanut Pro
Slackware 10
SUSE 9.0
SUSE 9.1
Xandros
Yoper

BLAG came in second, Yoper in first. Yoper is a heavily speed-optimized distro. If I get a chance I'll take it for a spin and see if I can integrate some of it's optimizations into BLAG. Some of them I know I can't intergrate as I try not to change the main things that make blag compatible with Fedora Core and the repositories (e.g kernel, glibc, etc.).

Here's the benchmark results:

It also appeared in heise.de for those of you that speak german or bablefish.

P.S. FWIW, I don't put too much weight into this benchmarking, but it was cute to find us up there. ;)

I tried out yoper linux before and I would have to say that I still enjoy blag more. Yoper was too confusing for a linux newbie to use. Especially on how to install the dam thing. I Like blag because I recomend it to costomers of mine who are fet up with windows and do not want to spend $100 on windows XP.

and most people who are gamers could care less about trying to get the thing installed and care about playing games. :D maybe if i get my old computer up and running i'll give it a try (i think the motherboard is messed)

Here's a list of nice benchmarking apps. I may include bonnie++ in the next blag.

For the love of god, who designed those comparison tables?
They almost look suspicious

I suggest you try a few distros out for yourself. Then see what you think is quickest. The less features a distro has the quicker it will most likely be. I can say in my own experience BLAG is quicker to get from scratch to finish than anything else I have tried.

With others, they may install quicker but then I then have to configure them and install new apps. With BLAG you go from A to B in less than an hour and that includes setting up desktop, mail settings, IRC, bookmarks etc. Maybe my set up is a little too biased in favour of BLAG and therefore my comparisons are inaccurate but really I don't think it is the case.

I use KDE for both BLAG and Slackware. Both look the same, act the same and do the same thing now I have customised both. Getting BLAG to look, act and feel my way was quicker than it was getting the same from Slackware. My computer is quick. Really quick. Probably not quick enough to win benchmarks etc but quick enough for me to call it quick.

I think someone on the yoper project ran the benchmarks. I just came across them on the 'net.
